Whose is it?

This is a quick icebreaker and simple team building activity you can do in both a virtual or in-person setting. It helps the team get to know each other on a personal level without requiring high-pressure performance. Ask for input before the session in the form of photos, images, or answers. In the session, you all guess who the item belongs to.

Preparation

  1. Send a request to participants before the meeting to provide a specific item. Examples include:

    • Scroll and send the 17th photo they have in their smartphone.

    • Take a photo of their pet, family, favourite thing at home or work.

    • Google and select their favourite food, destination, hobby, etc.

    • Answer a question like: “Which superhero would you like to be?” or “What’s the weirdest job you have had?”

  2. Collect these into a slide deck or a folder ready to share during the session.

Steps

  1. In the session, show one image or read out one answer at a time.
  2. Ask everyone to guess whose image or answer it is.
  3. Also mention that the owner of the photo should deliberately guess incorrectly to keep the game going.

Debrief

While this is primarily a quick icebreaker, a short debrief can highlight the connections made.

  • Which photo or answer surprised you the most?

  • Did you learn something new about a colleague today?

  • How easy was it to guess the owner?

Bonus tip

You can use this activity to check that the participants actually can access and use your collaboration tool before the session starts. Give them instructions to upload their photo into the collaboration space and follow up with anyone who hasn’t successfully done so.

What you need

  • No props needed (just a screen to share images if remote)
